An Organisation with High Standards and Passionate People

Our Mission is to

"Provide Quality Outdoor Experiential Education Capitalising on the Unique Situation of the Camp"

The Motutapu Outdoor Education Camp is located at Administration Bay on the northern shores of Motutapu Island. It encompasses 5 hectares of grounds within the boundaries of camp yet guests have the luxury of exploring more than 3800 hectares (over both Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands), of land managed by the Department of Conservation that is dotted with archaeological sites, the remains of the guns, tunnels and bunkers used during WWII, walking tracks, wildlife and the biggest Pohutukawa Forest in the world.

The camp facilities were originally constructed as an Artillery Camp in WWII, serving as barracks for the 6-inch battery personnel and as the overall headquarters and administrative centre for the island. Listed as an A1 Historical site, the buildings are still preserved in their original design; however upgrading and maintenance make it a more comfortable facility than that which our war veterans would have experienced.

Once the site was decommissioned by the Military it was handed over to be utilised by the youth of New Zealand and since 1966 the facilities have functioned as an outdoor education camp. The Motutapu Outdoor Education Trust (an IRD approved charitable trust) was formed in 1991 and is the current Concession/ Lease Holder operating the camp.

Every member of the Motutapu Outdoor Education camp team, from the head of the trust board to the seasonal instructors, hold an intrinsic belief in the benefit of outdoor educational experiences in aiding the growth and development of young and old alike. It is this passion and belief in what we do and what the organisation stands for, that drives all of us to ensure that all our guests depart our shores with memories of a life time.

We are an Outdoors Mark accredited organisation meaning that our safety systems and procedures meet or exceed industry best practice (click here to learn more about the Outdoors Mark). From the hiring of staff right through to the maintenance of gear, you can rest assured that our systems and practice are of the highest standard.
